“This flower, this light, this moment, this silence —
… The flower is itself. The light is itself.
The silence is itself. I am myself
All perhaps illusion but no matter….”
- Thomas Merton, Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander

Thomas Keating, Trappist monk, author, and one of the founding developers of the Centering Prayer method, once posed the question: Why go on retreat? His response: “to experience the deepest silence” and “just … be, opening uninterruptedly to God’s presence and to the enormous energy of love that creates and sustains us and the universe…”

Even in our COVID world, it’s important to step away from daily life and turn our focus inward. During this retreat, silence will begin after Sunday night’s gathering and end after breakfast on Wednesday. In between, there will be periods of Centering Prayer, lectio divina and eco divina (listening to God in Nature), morning and evening prayer as well as personal time to walk the grounds, beach or labyrinth, read, journal or simply gaze at the waters of Long Island Sound.

Come listen to the still small voice. Let the deep silence enfold you, embrace you.
