October 3-4, 2020

“I crave a wide sea of wordless moments that allow me
to express myself in another language, one more ancient and primal.
I want to become a disciple of silence and hear in that
shimmering soundlessness the voice of the One who whispers in stillness,
whose singing vibrates in stones, who out of the silence calls forth
a radical commitment of which I do not yet know the shape.”
– Christine Valters Paintner, Earth Our Original Monastery
Join us for this two-day live, virtual retreat over the Feast of St Francis where we will explore the gift of Earth as our original monastery. Francis, a revered Catholic friar who gave up his life of wealth to live a life of poverty, is the patron saint of animals and the environment. He sang in praise of brother wind and sister earth and saw the animals as his companions. In these days of climate crisis and global pan-demic, how might we grow in intimacy with the elements and creatures? How might we listen more closely to Earth’s wisdom for us?
During this weekend retreat we will explore spiritual practices which help us to cultivate an Earth-cherishing consciousness and to fall more deeply in love with creation. Sessions will include presentations, reflections, song, meditations, poetry, creative exercises and explorations, gentle movement, small group and partner sharing, guidance for time outside in between sessions, and time for questions and input.
This will be Christine Valters Paintner's first, virtual weekend retreat ever to be offered. She will draw primarily from her two newest books - Earth, Our Original Monastery: Cultivating Wonder and Gratitude Through Intimacy with Nature (Ave Maria Press, 2020) and her second collection of poems, The Wisdom of Wild Grace (Paraclete Press, 2020). At the core of this collection are poems inspired by stories of kinship between saints and animals. They come mostly from the early Christian desert and Celtic traditions, but also feature later medieval saints like Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Julian of Norwich.
Christine Valters Paintner is the online Abbess at www.AbbeyoftheArts.com, a virtual monastery without walls offering a variety of classes in contemplative practice and creative expression. She is the author of 12 books on spirituality, contemplative practice, and creative expression. Living out her commitment as a Benedictine Oblate, she and her husband reside in Galway, Ireland, where the retreat will take place live via Zoom videoconference technology.
