Care and Prayer: Support and Inspiration for Those Engaged in the Holy Tasks of Caregiving
With Gunilla Norris and John Roarke
The giving of care is intermixed with many things: love, responsibility, relentlessness, confusion, control, fatigue, anger, despair, humor and sadness. God’s Presence is throughout if we would only sense it and find that as we love we are also being loved. This is a day in which caregivers can take a breath, find solace with others, explore and claim conscious limits to their commitment, practice forgiveness and prayerfully find how God's action and Presence can transform even the most difficult of days.
For whom is this new day retreat? The program is for caregivers of all ages and faith backgrounds. It may be especially beneficial for spiritual directors, Hospice workers, health and healing professionals, visiting nurses and other in-home care companions, senior center personnel, veteran’s affairs professionals, clergy, ministers, chaplains, geriatricians and mental health providers, including social workers and grief counselors.
Gunilla Norris is the author of 11 books on the spirituality of the everyday. Being Home, Becoming Bread, Inviting Silence, A Mystic Garden, Simple Ways, Sheltered in the Heart, Match, Embracing the Seasons, Companions on the Way, Great Love in Little Ways, and in 2020, Touched by Blessing. She is a mother and a grandmother. She has been a psychotherapist in private practice for more than 40 years and has felt privileged to accompany many people on their journeys to growth, healing and spiritual connectedness. Gunilla is the author of the lyrics to “Warmed: Songs of Heart and Spirit,” a CD performed by RiverFlow that gives all of its proceeds to the WARM Center to feed and clothe the homeless in CT and RI http://warmcenter.org/. The CD and several of her books are available in the Mercy by the Sea bookstore.
John Roarke was an actor and comedian in Los Angeles appearing in numerous TV shows, films, and live venues. While changing careers to become a mental health counselor, John suddenly found himself as the caregiver for his aunt, which challenged him – but later inspired him – to assist those on that sacred journey. John has also worked with bereaved children, college students and those experiencing Cancer. He is a contemplative practitioner and is a student of the Living School, which is affiliated with Father Richard Rohr’s Center for Action and Contemplation in New Mexico. https://cac.org/living-school/living-school-welcome/
