Ash Wednesday: Lent's Threshold to "Creative Newness"

with Claire Rusowicz

“The life of Jesus shows us that to live within fixed boundaries of the expected, which seem to provide stability, security, and certainty, is to be dead even when alive. To be open and ready for the unexpected is to be open to the creativity of life …. In Jesus, God arrives as the future.” --Ilia Delio, OSF, Ph.D., “Cyborg Life and Paschal Mystery”

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday’s full-throated cry to “return to me with your whole heart.” (Joel, 2) Yet, it is not a call to go backwards, to walk these 40 days on familiar, well-trod paths of prayer and practice for the sake of getting “back on track.” Instead, it’s a passionate urging toward adventure, and an opportunity to open virgin, sacred space in our lives and relationships in which “creative newness” can emerge. How ready are we to welcome the “God of the future” into our Lenten journeys of intention and focus? How can you listen more deeply and respond most authentically this year to God’s invitation to risk and trust: “No need to recall the past, no need to think about what was done before. See, I am doing a new deed…. I am making a road in the wilderness…”(Isaiah, 43)

This retreat day will include input, conversation, silence and, weather permitting, time outside to listen into the seasonal signs of renewal. If you wish, please bring your favorite or new-found book, image, journal or any other companioning resource that will be part of your own Lenten journey. We’ll place them near our gathering space to bless as well as offer as inspiration to one another. The fee includes the program and lunch.
