Holding the Kernel of Gold at the Heart of Love
Artwork by Patricia Brintle
We are One, one universe, one cosmos, one earth community. There is a synchronicity in the universe. Nature reveals this to us: birds flying in flight patterns, pods of sea creatures swimming together, pendulums swinging in rhythm. Yet in the hubbub of the day, we lose sight of this reality. Death and destruction happen beyond our understanding and ability to resolve them. How then are we called?
We seem to live between two experiences of awareness: awareness of being at the edge where chaos, brokenness and destructiveness often exist and the awareness of the deep center of our existence, what Thomas Merton calls the “little kernel of gold which is the essence of you” where God who is Love is present enlivening us. [Cynthia Bourgeault]
The Triduum takes us between edge and center. The view from the Cross is different from the view of those standing at the foot of the Cross. Going to the edge shifts our balance. Going together helps us and holds us in a synchronicity of being. For nature teaches us that we do not stand alone. We are one with all that is. At our depth, we are one in a community of Love.
We come to the Triduum with these questions from the edge. We join together to deepen our awareness of that kernel of gold in the heart of love that is within each of us and all of us together. As we stand at the edge, we need to find the Heart of Love for our fellow human beings and for all creation as Christ did on Calvary. Being willing together to enter the chaos, wildness, unpredictability and suffering of the edge without losing hope of the kernel of gold at the center will sound forth our Easter Alleluia.
Our Triduum retreat begins at 5 p.m. on Holy Thursday, April 9. This retreat is grounded in an atmosphere of silence which begins Holy Thursday evening and extends until the Easter Vigil, Saturday, April 11, at 8:00 p.m.
Commuters are welcome to join us. For commuters, a donation of $20.00 is suggested for the Holy Thursday dinner. Please email Rosemary in Guest Services or call (203) 245-0401 to register for the Holy Thursday dinner.
Please bring a loaf of bread for all to share and a non-perishable food item for our local food pantry collection.
