"I AM Who I AM:" The Invitation at the Heart of Centering Prayer
with Anne Simpkinson and Claire Rusowicz
"Job again answered God, saying …
True, I spoke without understanding
of things about which I did not know …
In the past I had heard You with my ears;
now I see You with my eyes.
Therefore, I surrender to the silence."
The practice of Centering Prayer engages our desire to, "consent to the presence and action of God in our life," – the God who is, and not the God we expect or seek. As such, the silence and stillness in which we are invited to rest may offer spacious hospitality to a God of unsettling mystery – unfamiliar, unpredictable and sometimes disturbingly unconcerned about our own agendas. Over time, the peace we expect as a result of our contemplative sittings may be "anything but." After the periods of prayer, we can find our hearts and spirits stretched well beyond what feels comfortable or even deserved.
This day offers opportunity for Centering Prayer and explorations of our own experiences with the Sacred, "I AM." What are the challeng-es and resistances, growth and freedom we can recognize as a result of our contemplative sittings? There will be two 20-minute periods of Centering Prayer, one in the morning and then afternoon. The remaining time will include input, with time to reflect and discuss ques-tions and relevant selected readings. The program is designed for those experienced with Centering Prayer.*
