Ash Wednesday: Pausing at the Threshold to Lent
with Claire Rusowicz
“And whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the
door and pray to your God in Secret …” – Matthew 6:5-9
Lent returns, inviting us to engage with the experience and desires that enliven our relationship with God – the Sacred we encounter each day in others, ourselves and creation. Ash Wednesday provides a meaningful pause to consider how to respond whole-heartedly to the prophetic call to “return.”
This day of retreat, we will focus on the invitations around prayer, listening deeply into Jesus’ simple yet profound teachings shared through Matthew’s Gospel. At this time in your life, how do you experience the invitation to greater intimacy and trust in prayer? What challenges, questions, resistances are you encountering in your prayer? What intentions around prayer are you drawn to articulate and live into for the next 40 days?
The day will include input, conversation, communal prayer and silence. If you wish, please bring your favorite or new-found book, image, journal or any other companioning resource that will be part of your own Lenten journey. We’ll place them near our gathering space to bless as well as offer as inspiration to one another.
