Nature Nurture: Into the Peace of the Woods
with Lucy Meigs and Claire Rusowicz
"I’m moved by nature’s power and beauty, but what sets me afire is
the longing I sense there of everything else waiting to connect…"
- Belden Lane
Join us for a morning ramble in a nearby nature preserve, led by naturalist Lucy Meigs, founder and director of the Connecticut nonprofit, Everyone Outside, and Mercy by the Sea program associate, Claire Rusowicz. This walk will provide an opportunity to stretch your legs and spirit, learn about and appreciate the local flora and fauna just beyond our front doorsteps, and simply focus on being present to the splendor that nature is offering.
This gentle, two-mile, contemplative hike is designed to encourage us to slow down and notice the ground under our feet, while we listen, smell, touch and see the astonishing world surrounding us. We will enjoy quiet time — both silent walking and resting. Lucy will also provide information about the natural world around us, helping us train our senses to notice what we may encounter in our own neighborhoods. While not difficult, the trail will have embedded rocks and exposed tree roots, and some gentle ascents and descents. There also may be some muddy terrain, depending on the pre-hike weather.
The walk is scheduled for Thursday, July 20, (Rain date: Friday, July 21) from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The fee is $10. If you'd like to have lunch at the Center from 12-1 p.m., the fee is $25, for both walk and lunch. Lunch will be available only for those who have preregistered with the additional fee.
Registration is required by 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 19. To include lunch, please register by Tuesday, July 18. Registrants will be sent an email by 6:00 a.m. on the day of the hike if we need to move the hike to our rain date or cancel entirely due to weather. Refunds are available only for hikes cancelled by the Center.
We will gather at Mercy by the Sea for possible carpooling to the walk site; directions to trail heads, as well as walk starting time will also be available for those who need to go directly to the walk site. Participants are invited back to the Center afterwards for conversation, a cold drink and reflection. As indicated above, lunch is only available for those who have pre-registered for the lunch
Walks will be suitable for older children and adults. No dogs or other pets allowed. Each participant is responsible for wearing and/or bringing appropriate clothing, walking/hiking shoes, water container, hiking stick or insect repellant. All walkers will be required to sign a liability waiver.
Lucy Meigs is founder and director of Everyone Outside, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides opportunities for people to spend time outside in order to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Everyone Outside grew out of Lucy’s' passion to connect people with the natural world, and she has been leading walks to take adults and children out into nature since 1998. Everyone Outside promotes this personal connection through guided hikes and activities, school field trips and programs, free classroom curriculum, after-school programs, volunteer opportunities and an informative website.
Claire Rusowicz, Program Associate, is a certified spiritual and retreat director, and spiritual director supervisor. Her current work at the Center includes program development and presentation, and as co-facilitator of Centering Prayer groups and programs.
